Our Philosophy
Everyone deserves the best chance to improve their swallowing or communication, and we will give you the time and support to do this. Our belief is that therapy is a partnership, as such we will listen to you about your goals and wishes to enable us to plan together how to meet them. If decisions need to be made, we will work through them together to ensure you are comfortable. We have a functional and holistic approach to all aspects of our work.

About Jennifer
With over 20 years as an NHS speech therapist before founding Jennifer Benson Speech & Language Therapy, I’ve treated patients across acute wards, rehabilitation units, care homes, hospices and in their own homes, specialising in neurological conditions such as MND/ALS, Parkinson’s, stroke, traumatic brain injury and brain tumours. From early preventative therapy to supporting decision-making and communication at the end of life, I work extensively with voice banking, presenting at the International Alliance of ALS/MND AHP Forum, appearing on national TV and earning a runner-up spot in the HSJ “Compassionate Patient Care” awards. As an experienced trainer, I deliver communication, feeding and swallowing and mental capacity assessment courses for healthcare teams and Speech and Language Therapists, and teach nationally on behalf of the MND Association. I’m passionate about promoting early access to voice banking and empowering every patient through expert communication support.

About Lisa
Lisa graduated from Birmingham City University in 2009 with a BSc(Hons) degree in Speech and Language Therapy. She started working the same year as a Speech and Language Therapist with community based adults and completed her training in adult swallowing disorders.
In 2010 Lisa made the move from the community setting to continue developing her speech and language therapy skills in a hospital environment where she continues to work to this day.
Lisa worked across a range of different clinical areas before specialising in the area of stroke and neurology where she developed high quality therapeutic skills and also discovered a true passion for rehabilitation of both swallowing and communication disorders.
In 2019, Lisa became the clinical lead for rehabilitation and began working primarily in the area of complex rehabilitation. She has gained a high level of respect from the team on this ward as was invited to speak at the 4th Regional Rehabilitation Conference in Sept 2022.
Lisa has a specialist interest in cognitive communication disorders since she started working with this caseload in 2019. She has attended a number of learning events over the past 2 years and continues to keep up to date with the latest research. She uses her knowledge and creativity to help her clients develop their skills in the real world situation and uses her skills with a dynamic therapy approach to ensure maximum benefit.
Lisa also has a keen interest is swallowing disorders; she feels everyone should be given the chance to eat and drink. She will trial out different therapy techniques to find the best approach for her clients, as she understands that every human is different.
As a passionate and hard working individual, Lisa enjoys the challenge of problem solving and believes that keeping up to date with the latest research along with developing an open and honest connection with people enables the best way to achieve positive outcomes.
